The Art of Independent Shoe Design: 20 Years of Sculpting Handmade Luxury Footwear
In this article, I want to share how my 20 years as an independent shoe designer led me to develop a freehand drafting process directly on the last, allowing me to push the boundaries of luxury footwear production and create truly unique wearable art.
Two Decades as an Independent Shoe Designer and Footwear Educator
My twenty years of working as an independent shoe designer and teaching shoemaking have shown me that real mastery in luxury footwear production comes from understanding how leather actually behaves on a three-dimensional form. You cannot learn this magic from a textbook or an automated computer program; you have to live it at the workbench, cutting patterns, lasting shoes, and teaching students how to feel the tension of the material.
When you spend two decades doing this every day, you stop seeing shoes as just something to sell. You see them as an extension of the human body. In my studio, my partner and I don't care about mass-market trends; we care about making shoes that have a soul, combining years of hard-earned technical skill with a deep love for the craft.
The Freehand Philosophy: Designing Shoes Directly on the Last Without Formulas
Because I have completely mastered traditional pattern formulas over my 20-year career, I am able to use my freehand drafting method to break the forbidden textbook rules and create a radically free way of designing shoes. I know exactly how standard formulas work, but my years at the bench have proven that true innovation happens when you go beyond what is written in the textbooks. As a master shoemaker, I know how to find the exact sweet spot where comfort and avant-garde design meet—working both inside and outside the rules to create unusual, striking shapes that standard formulas simply cannot calculate.
The Sculpted Rose Sandal: Merging Fine Art with Luxury Footwear Production
The creation of our "Rose" sandal perfectly demonstrates how my artistic evolution allows me to merge fine art sculpting with the precise demands of luxury footwear production. Today, I see shapes and colors as one inseparable entity—in fact, the material itself often dictates the final shoe design to me.
In the "Rose" sandal, I immediately recognized that to emphasize the organic softness of the sculpted flower, the material itself had to be equally soft, which led me straight to premium suede leather. Because my partner and I handcraft these shoes in small batches in our Belgrade studio, we can spend hours manipulating every single suede layer by hand, ensuring that this avant-garde piece of wearable art is not just visually striking but also feels like a second skin.
